They are next to each other, wedged between the actual town of Colne and the nearby village of Trawden. Cottontree is generally situated in the valley along the road that runs from Colne to Trawden. Winewall is generally on the hillside overlooking Cottontree and the road. The road that runs between Cottontree and Winewall connects to Laneshaw Bridge, Wycoller and is an alternative route to Trawden.
Winewall also has one of England's last Inghamite Churches.
